Dreaming of a fresh start in British Columbia? If you’re a hairdresser, esthetician, or nail tech from outside Canada, the good news is that BC’s beauty industry is full of opportunity. But before you pack your tools and head north, there are a few important steps you’ll need to take.

First things first: immigration.
To legally work in Canada, you’ll need to follow the federal rules set out by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). That might mean applying for a work permit, permanent residency, or looking into pathways like the Express Entry system if you’re planning a longer-term move. It’s best to start with the IRCC website or speak with an immigration consultant to see which path suits you best.

Now, what about licensing?
Here’s where BC is a little different. Back in 2003, the provincial government deregulated licensing for hairdressers and estheticians. That means there’s no formal license you have to hold in order to work in a salon or spa. While this opens the door a little wider for newcomers, it also means that standing out from the crowd becomes even more important.

So how do you prove your skills?
We recommend working toward a Red Seal certification if you’re a hairstylist. This nationally recognized trade credential shows employers and clients that you meet a high standard of training and experience.

For estheticians and others working in skincare or nail services, the BeautyCouncil Certificate of Qualification is a great way to show you meet Canadian industry expectations. It’s respected throughout BC and can help build trust with employers and clients.
