Preparing to vote for the next government

Do you know how each party may affect your business?

The best part of living in a democracy is being able to influence how your life and your business will be governed in the future.

That means getting out to vote and play your part – not only for yourself, but also for your fellow personal service colleagues.

Why is voting important?

Aside from the needs of your family and personal leanings, the federal government influences many aspects of your business, including:

  • How federal taxes are calculated across many aspects of your business
  • Rules relating to how independent operators function in relation to your business
  • Grants, loans, and refunds
  • Environmental regulations and rules around ingredients in cosmetics
  • Determining how many new Canadians (immigrants and refugees) will be available for work
  • Retirement assistance through taxation

How do I decide on which party is best for me?

We’d like to offer a few starting points so you can make the best decision for your needs.

Step one: Your local MP is your voice in Ottawa

The names you see on the local billboards are the people you can call, text, or even see in person to have your voice heard in person. You will vote for your local Member of Parliament (MP) so get to know each of them as best you can and don’t be shy to ask them questions – they want your vote. Find your candidates here.

Step two: Use this free tool to have your political personalty revealed

The anonymous Vote Compass questionnaire is about 30 questions and usually only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Once you finish, the site will analyse your responses and compare them with the policies of the candidates. It’s a great way to check in with a proven tool to help align your preference with party platforms. Start here.

Step three: Check out the platforms for each party to see what they have to offer you

Lastly, take a peek at what the main party platform has to say and where you may align. These are the stated goals of each party and their stand on common concerns you may have. We provide links to each party here – be sure to dig down into the sections around “jobs”, “economy”, or “small business” to get a picture of how each party may affect your salon, spa or barbershop.
