How will this client-teaching concept affect you?

Sally’s is rolling out a test concept store where clients are taught styling and colour application. What are your thoughts?
We wanted to share some news with you about a new concept in the hairdressing world. Sally Beauty recently opened a DIY hair salon and concept store called “Studio By Sally’s” in Denton, Texas. The idea is to help customers learn how to do their own hair at home with some guidance from professional hairdressers.
What it’s all about
This store is a mix of a regular shop and a hands-on educational space. Customers can get one-on-one help or attend small group sessions to learn how to do a specific hairstyle. Then they leave with their hair done and the knowledge to recreate the look themselves. They even offer free workshops and events to show off different techniques.
Hair colour will be included
“Demystifying the hair coloring process is the key barrier to unlocking a successful DIY journey for consumers,” Brenda Rutenber, Sally Beauty’s group vice president of stores, said in a statement. “That’s why having a licensed stylist-educator there at every step of the process – from choosing the right color and developer to mixing and customizing it – is key. The teaching salon model combined with the shoppable retail portion of the store makes the concept so unique.”
The roll-out plan
Sally Beauty is planning to open five more of these studios this year, and maybe even 100 across the U.S. in the next few years. Their goal is to make hair coloring at home easier for everyone by having a licensed stylist there to help choose the right color and teach customers how to mix and apply it.
While this prototype is in the U.S., if it works it will likely make it to Canada and influence client expectations.
Potential market and impact
The hair color and dye market in the U.S. is expected to be over $40 billion this year, and hair coloring makes up around 13% of the hair care industry. With so many people coloring their hair four to five times a year, this could be a game-changer!
Sally Beauty is a big player in the home-use professional hair color market, with over 3,100 stores worldwide, including around 2,300 locations in the U.S.
