Are you wondering if vaccines will be made available early for you or your team? A number of members have been asking and we’re seeing this being raised on social media. We have some input from various levels of government and suggestions from members. We’re inviting you to contribute your ideas and thoughts this week (survey below). We will assemble this input and form an industry request for provincial governments to consider. Jump down to survey here.
Some things to keep in mind are:
- Given that many sectors where there may be a greater danger of contracting COVID-19 (flight attendants and pilots, transit workers, and food service workers), we can see how those jobs may see early vaccinations before personal services.
- Some types of jobs in our industry have been more affected than others – mobile workers who visit care homes, skin care providers where a mask cannot be worn during a facial, and barbers who cannot provide a shave with a mask in place. The government may see those people needing a vaccine sooner simply to get back to work safely like the rest of the industry.
- Several people have noted that chiropractors, RMTs, and dentists have been vaccinated early. Those who work in these fields often work alongside doctors in the name of rehabilitation (which is why they can provide insurance-covered services), belong to a college, and are registered with that college. In the case of personal services, and depending on the jurisdiction, anyone may be able to claim they work in a salon, spa, or barbershop and jump the queue. The government may be hesitant to grant early vaccinations where there is no “top-to-bottom” form of registration.
As a member, we want to hear from you. Please take a moment to complete our short survey – your answers will be kept confidential and help us make an informed recommendation to provincial health and industry authorities.
