Animal testing for cosmetics now fully banned in Canada

Big news from the federal government – animal testing is banned.
The Canadian government has just passed a significant law: animal testing for cosmetic products is now completely banned in Canada.
But that’s not all.
This law also puts a stop to the sale of any beauty products that use new animal testing data to show they’re safe. What’s more, any misleading labels about animal testing in cosmetics are now a no-go. This was part of the federal government’s budget implementation legislation, Bill C-47, which included amendments enacting the ban and making it illegal to sell products that rely on animal testing data.
Cosmetics include: A “cosmetic” is any substance used to clean, improve or change the complexion, skin, hair, nails or teeth. Cosmetics include beauty preparations (make-up, perfume, skin cream, nail polish) and grooming aids (soap, shampoo, shaving cream, deodorant).
In what ways are products not tested on animals good for business?
- Enhance Brand Image: Offering cruelty-free products can improve your reputation and appeal to an increasingly conscientious client base. This decision demonstrates that the business values ethical practices, which can be a compelling selling point for many clients.
- Attract Socially-Conscious Clients: More and more, clients are actively seeking out businesses that align with their values. By selling products not tested on animals, salons and spas can attract those who prioritize cruelty-free, ethical purchases.
- Market Differentiation: In a competitive market, having a unique selling proposition helps to stand out. Being known as a salon or spa that only uses and sells cruelty-free products can differentiate a business from its competitors, potentially attracting more customers.
- Regulatory Compliance: With increasing numbers of jurisdictions introducing legislation against animal testing, using and selling cruelty-free products is a future-proof way of ensuring your business remains compliant with such laws.
- Environmental Responsibility: Animal testing can have a significant environmental impact. By choosing to sell products not tested on animals, businesses contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly industry.
Retailing cruelty-free products the ethically right thing to do, it can also be beneficial from a business perspective. It’s a win-win!
